Aurivale

Realm: Central Dawnreach
Capital City: Elaren
Ruler: High Queen Maelira
Magic: The Old Ways — Earth and Moon
People: Valefolk (commonfolk)

Aurivale is the fertile heartland of Dawnreach — a land of rolling meadows, mist-draped foothills, silver-threaded rivers, and moonlit groves. Outwardly peaceful and agrarian, it is known for its abundant agriculture, leathercraft, and wool exports. Its landscapes are beautiful but deceptively well-defended.

To most visitors, Aurivale appears serene: festivals under moonlight, quiet farming villages, and warm, hardworking people. But beneath the surface, Queen Maelira has transformed her realm into a hidden stronghold, training elite rangers and embedding spies among trade caravans that cross northern and southern borders.

Magic & Lore

Magic:
Aurivale practices an earth-and-moon-based branch of the Old Ways. Magic is often subtle: fertility rites, protection charms, weather blessings; and woven into daily life by hearthbinders and seers. Children born with stronger gifts are quietly chosen and sent to train further.

Culture & People:
Aurivalens (often called Valefolk) are known for their warmth, hospitality, and deep connection to the land. Outsiders often mistake them for simple farmers, but every village child knows how to move unseen in the woods and when to heed the whisper of the trees. Villages operate with strong kinship networks, often gathering by hearthlight to share lore, songs, and moon rituals. Food, story, and service are seen as sacred.

Political Climate:
While publicly committed to peace, Aurivale is under quiet threat from Sablemere to the south. Queen Maelira, a ruler of great subtlety and foresight, has prepared her nation for conflict without breaking its façade of calm. As tensions rise, Aurivale’s old ways may prove to be its strongest weapon.

Places of Interest

Elaren – not a city of spires and marble — it is a city of gardens, groves, and layered stone, built where river meets hillside in the Southern part of Aurivale. Nestled among ancient trees and terraced farmland, Elaren seems to rise gently from the earth rather than impose upon it. Buildings are made of river stone and timber, topped with moss-lined roofs or green tiles that reflect the seasons. At its center stands the Queen’s Hall, built into a rise called Moonsward Hill

The Queen’s Hall – not a towering palace but a fortified hall built into the green hills above Elaren. Cloaked in ivy, stone, and silence and known simply as The Queen’s Hall, it blends so seamlessly with the hillside that travelers often pass by without realizing royalty resides within. Its walls are made of smooth riverstone and earth-packed timber, reinforced with magic from the old ways, a defense of root and rune rather than steel and spire.

Queen’s Road – the main artery through central Aurivale, a wide path that links the outlying villages to the capital city of Elaren. Though it has been regraded and maintained through the years, much of it still follows the original ley-paths. It lined with low stone walls and old growth trees.

The Ridge of Watchers – a narrow, windswept rise that runs along the southern edge of Aurivale, not far from the borderlands that edge into Sablemere. It’s a place of quiet tension and old protection — a natural wall of stone and scrub, dotted with gnarled trees and ancient standing stones.

Hollowhall – hidden ranger outpost nestled in the northern foothills of Aurivale, carved seamlessly into mossy hills and wrapped in mist. From the outside, it appears part of the landscape, with only a discreet stone path and moonlit sigils hinting at its presence. Inside, stone halls, quiet courtyards, and woodland-fed hearthrooms create a space of calm discipline and quiet magic. It is both sanctuary and proving ground where Aurivale’s chosen are trained.

Moonfold Vale – secluded glen deep within the heart of Aurivale. Said to be one of the last places where the three goddesses once stood together, it holds powerful echoes of the Old Ways. Hearthbinders and seers make quiet pilgrimages there, especially during the full Seedmoon, when the veil between land and magic feels thinnest.
